Hello! Nanga def? How are you?

We’d like to introduce ourselves:

We are the girls and boys of The Swallow!

The Swallow is an educational center in The Gambia, West Africa.

Our country is one of the poorest in the world, but at The Swallow we’re lucky: we love coming to school every day, because our classes are exciting, the whole school works as a team, and we are well cared for: we even get a hot meal every day!

In the classroom we learn to read and do math.

We work in teams of ten children, carrying out assignments and learning to take care of ourselves and others.

Every Friday, we can join workshops on  health, nutrition, sports, handicrafts, drama, or gardening. It’s the most fun day of the week!

Our teachers don’t just work with us;

They also cooperate with other schools, to help other kids get a better education as well. Sometimes they come over to our school, to see how we do things here.

How about you? Would you like to visit us sometime?

Best wishes from all the girls and boys at The Swallow.

p.s.: We got a brand new school building, thanks to the help of lots of generous people:

patrons who make monthly donations, schools and communities who raised funds for us, and the Art for Africa project, enthusiastically run by Geena Lisa and her friends

Once upon a time there was a little bird… She was a happy bird! Until one day the mother told her: “Now you are old enough; you have to go to school to learn how to fly!”

The little swallow didn’t want to go to school. She said: “I like to jump in cool grass or in soft sand. I like to go around and search for food!” But no way, she had to go to school.
